The countdown to Christmas 2018 is on and it really is the most wonderful time of the year for going to events in the city. Whether you’re looking to get silly this festive season or enjoy some quality time with your family, there‘s something on offer for everyone in Dublin over the coming weeks.
Here’s our pick of the best events that you should check out in the run up to Christmas:
Jay Gatsby is throwing another glittering party at the Gate this winter. Following a sell-out run in 2017, the immersive experience returns for a limited season from November 15th. The theatre will be transformed into the Gatsby Mansion with all its decadence.
Organisers say: “The seats will be removed from the auditorium and audiences will have access to the stage and backstage areas, the Green Room, hospitality room and the Studio space, allowing them to experience one of Gatsby’s unique and legendary parties, with a bar in full swing. For those who missed it last time, and for those who can’t wait to do it all again, 1920s style is encouraged, and dancing shoes are mandatory!”

Looking to find some hidden gems, buy some presents and bag a bargain? The Christmas instalment of the Dublin Flea Market takes place in Point Square from December 6th-9th and again from December 13th-16th, where a number of art, design, craft retro, vintage and antique collectors and artisan food stands will be trading.
Each market will host a different selection of 140 quality stalls each weekend. Commenting on the return of the event, organisers said: “There is absolutely no mass-produced manufactured goods on sale. We have selected only the best, and we have made sure our wide variety of stalls is as crazy-good on each weekend. So be ready to be very inspired and seriously proud of our creative nation, and get all of your quality Christmas gifts under one lovely roof!”
A drive-in cinema is coming to Dublin this Christmas. Retro Drive-In Movies will return to Leopardstown Racecourse from December 13th-16th and again on December 23rd. Love Actually, Elf, Santa Claus – The Movie, Home Alone and more will be shown on the world’s biggest outdoor LED screen at the event.
Cinema goers can watch classic movies from the comfort of their car and listen to the film through their car radio. There will also be a live DJ playing Christmas Songs, food stalls and lots of festive surprises. Retro Drive-In will include PJs and Pillows screenings of some of the movies, so you’ll be able to wear your favourite pyjamas and pack the car with pillows for the cosiest Christmas experience.

Wild Lights has returned to Dublin Zoo for winter 2018. The spectacular night-time event is open until January 6th. The theme this year is ‘Ocean of Light’, with an entirely new cast of illuminated giant silk lanterns celebrating the wonders of the life aquatic. From giant squid to hammerhead sharks, colossal blue whales and dainty seahorses, Dublin Zoo has been transformed into a sea of illumination.
In addition to Ocean of Light, a further three new areas feature in this year’s enchanting experience – Winter Wonderland, home to Arctic favourites such as polar bears and walruses, Celebrating China bringing a flavour of the Orient and The North Pole, home to a dazzling 16-metre high silk Christmas tree and a host of festive displays. Visitors will once again have the chance to be wowed by traditional Chinese performers, browse the newly extended craft market for Christmas gifts and enjoy a delicious array of Asian foods.

This Christmas, The Eatyard will be transformed into ‘Yuleyard’ – a winter wonderland! This will be the perfect spot for any Christmas lovers to take their festivities to the next level.
